New York, New York (Sept. 22, 2025) – The American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA) is kicking off its fall membership drive with reduced dues and membership eligibility requirements to respond to changes in the media industry and continue to support self-employed writers.
If you’ve thought of joining or rejoining before, but dues were too expensive or you didn’t have enough national or regional clips to qualify – it’s the perfect time to reconsider.
ASJA annual dues are now $179 for professional members and $159 for associate members. Writers are eligible to become a member at the professional level with four national level clips or client projects, or with one or more books published by a traditional or hybrid publisher. Writers with three or more clips from regional publications or regional clients may join at the associate level. Learn more about the membership eligibility changes in this ASJA Confidential blog post, and read the full membership eligibility requirements here.
As an added bonus, through the end of October, anyone who applies and is approved gets 3 valuable incentives:
- Free membership for the rest of 2025 as part of your 2026 annual dues
- Waiver of the regular $25 application fee for new applicants
- A free e-book about how to launch or expand your independent writing business
Attend a virtual open house on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 12-1 p.m. Eastern time to talk to current members and ask any questions you might have about the organization and its resources and benefits. Register here to join us!
Working for yourself as an independent writer doesn’t have to mean working by yourself. Whether you’re an established freelancer or recently laid off from a staff job, you can get training, client networking opportunities, camaraderie, and support by joining ASJA to team up with other freelancers.
