ASJA Exclusive: AI and the Writing Profession

January 28, 2026, 1:00 pm-2:00 pm ET

ASJA, Freelance Life, Freelancing, Journalism, Personal, Productivity, Running Your Business, Tips, Writing Skills

AI is changing the writing profession. But is it a powerful productivity tool or an existential threat to the field?

For ASJA’s first webinar of 2026, noted business author and writer Josh Bernoff will present new research on the opportunities and threats that AI represents to self-employed writers, including findings tailored exclusively to ASJA members.

The research is based the “AI and the Writing Profession” survey of close to 1,200 nonfiction writers that Bernoff and Gotham Ghostwriters conducted in fall 2025. Their goal: to provide dependable data that corporate, editorial, content, and publishing professionals can use to make informed decisions about writers, AI, and the media and communications ecosystem that relies on them.

Enough ASJA members participated in the survey that Bernoff agreed to present findings customized to the interests and goals of freelancers and other independent writers who make up the vast majority of ASJA members.

During this 1-hour presentation, expect to learn:

  • How writing professionals are using AI in their work
  • What the range is of attitudes about it
  • How AI will affect the writing profession over the long term
