Elizabeth Hanes

I’m an award-winning freelance health journalist and content marketing writer specializing in evidence-based, high-stakes health topics for professional, institutional, and public-facing audiences.

I work with publications, healthcare organizations, nonprofits, and mission-driven companies that need clear, accurate, and persuasive health content—without hype, oversimplification, or scientific shortcuts. My background as a registered nurse gives me a practical understanding of clinical realities, healthcare systems, and the real-world implications of health policy and medical research.

My work spans reported journalism, long-form features, expert-driven articles, white papers, web content, and thought leadership. I’m particularly well suited to projects that sit at the intersection of medicine, research, public health, health policy, and patient experience, where credibility, nuance, and clarity matter.

Editors and clients value me for three things:

1. Subject-matter fluency. I’m comfortable working directly with peer-reviewed research, clinical guidelines, and expert interviews, and translating complex material into language that’s accurate, responsible, and accessible to the intended audience.

2. Professionalism and reliability. I understand editorial processes, deadlines, fact-checking standards, and stakeholder review. I’m easy to work with, responsive, and respectful of both journalistic integrity and organizational constraints.

3. Strategic thinking. Beyond clean copy, I think about audience intent, messaging goals, and how content fits into a larger editorial or communications strategy. This is especially important in healthcare environments where trust is earned slowly and lost quickly.

My bylines include consumer, professional, and trade publications, as well as custom content for healthcare brands and institutions. I’ve written for audiences ranging from clinicians and healthcare leaders to patients, caregivers, and policymakers.

I’m open to:

• Reported features and service journalism
• Health and medical journalism assignments
• Content marketing and thought leadership for healthcare organizations
• White papers, reports, and educational materials
• Editorial consulting and project-based collaborations

I do not take on projects that require exaggerated claims, weak evidence, or misleading health messaging.

If you’re looking for a writer who understands healthcare from the inside, respects editorial rigor, and can handle complex topics with clarity and judgment, I’d be glad to connect.

I do also step outside the healthcare realm to write about art, antiques, and culture. I formerly was a cover features writer for AntiqueWeeks and contributor to History.com. Because what good is health without being able to enjoy it on the arts and culture?
