Speakers are:

  • Susan J. Gordon, whose just-completed memoir, Because of Eva: Solving Mysteries in My Family's Past, deals in large part with this topic, and with her need to repair the severing of ties caused by marital breakups in her family
  • Bob Brody, who has written essays about his mother, off and on, for more than 30 years, and more recently, about his father and mother-in-law as well. He also blogs at letterstomykids.org, where he has recorded similar recollections for his two children.

Whether or not your parents were kind, loving, abusive or absent, they have had an enormous, life-long impact on your life. And ever since the first kid cried "Mommy!" or "Daddy!" we writers have been writing, or deliberately not writing about our parents. Some of the questions raised are:

  • Is the need to find family greater among grown children of shattered families?
  • How does a child of severe parental cruelty fulfill the Biblical commandment to Honor Your Father and Mother?
  • What kinds of factors lead to the severing of family ties?
  • How do we forgive (or try to forgive) those people who were supposed to be our protectors?
  • To what extent are we, ourselves, prepared to share private facts and personal feelings about our parents with the public?
  • What kinds of markets are open to writers for these kinds of stories?

Presenter: Carolyn Clark, Yahoo! Web Trend Expert

When people have questions they turn to search engines for answers. Search activity can tell some interesting trends - hottest new gadget, most popular travel destination, or whether it's going to be a bad flu season. By digging deeper, insight into this activity can be used in more compelling ways. For instance, it can be interpreted to foresee trends and develop news stories as billions of searches lend themselves to many narratives. Figuring out the "what-does-it-all-mean" goes beyond declaring the winner in an ever-changing popularity contest, or what's on top of everyone's mind day to day. By analyzing what people are searching for, societal trends can be determined; some would go as far as to say that search trends can actually predict the future. Analyzing search trends helps us understand the impulses and processes of why people make their choices at that particular moment in time.

Top searches tell us what people are most interested and can also provide the "why" in your story. For example, consumers use the web to search for their health concerns often before they visit a doctor. In the winter months, Yahoo! sees an increase spike in searches related to the flu, including flu remedies, flu symptoms, sinus infections, sore throat remedies, etc. This information could be used as the proof point (according to Yahoo! searches are spiking for natural cold remedies, here are a few to consider...) both in the story or in a pitch to an editor.

As we look ahead to the holiday season we can predict how savvy consumers might be by looking at the top-searched gifts, top searches related to DIY projects, or the top-searched recipes. When breaking news occurs the web often tells a different story then what's just on the surface. For example, when Osama Bin Laden was killed Yahoo! saw an increase in the search "who is Osama Bin Laden" from younger users. We encourage writers to editorialize what this might mean. On a lighter note, we often see "when is Valentines' Day" search queries from men as we head into February...guys, it's the same day every year.

Carolyn Clark will discuss how attendees can have access to Yahoo! Search Trends and analysis, for free.

Carolyn Clark is a former TV producer who keeps a pulse on what people are buzzing about online by analyzing trends that are spiking on Yahoo!. She sifts through the billions of searches on Yahoo! and shares the burning questions and popular topics with the media and therefore consumers. She has been with the company for four years and manages the Search Trends program. Based in North Carolina, Carolyn is a southern girl with a New York City heart (where she lived for six years until recently), you will find both the New Yorker magazine and Garden & Gun magazine on her coffee table. During her time in public relations she has led publicity campaigns for such brands as Yahoo!, Mark Burnett Productions (Survivor, the Apprentice), Ace Hardware, GoSmile. She started her career as an NBC page in New York (yes, like Kenneth (30 Rock anyone?)) where she worked on Saturday Night Live, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and the Today Show. Carolyn loves music and is currently obsessed with a band called The Civil Wars, she is an avid reader (just wrapped up One Day by David Nicholls) and is a crafter/DIYer at heart.

2011-07-18 The Do's And Don'ts Of Writing Pricing Youtube

2011-07-18 The Do's And Don'ts Of Writing Pricing About 643 megs. mp4 format.

Figuring out what and how to charge is the biggest challenge for professional ghostwriters, speechwriters and other writers for hire. There's no universal standard or industry guidebook to follow. And many freelancers feel pressure to keep their fees relatively low to keep work coming in. As a result, even many accomplished pros end up questioning their judgment -- and worse, feeling under-compensated. Our panel focuses on these vexing financial issues. Our panel of pros share the practical and (often) painful lessons they have learned from years of writing and pricing for others, including rules of thumb and traps to avoid.
Panelists:

  • Dan Gerstein, President of Gotham Ghostwriters, New York's premier full-service writing firm
  • Laurie Lewis, Author, What to Charge: Pricing Strategies for Freelancers and Consultants
  • Ellen Neuborne, ASJA, former USA Today reporter, ghostwriter of more than a dozen book projects, creator of the online course "The Writer's Guide to Ghosting"
  • Linda Konner, ASJA member, Principal of the Linda Konner Literary Agency; nationally-recognized editor, author, and frequent lecturer at publishing conferences

2011-05-24 Ghost Writing Discussion About 663 megs. mp4 format.

With all the turns and churns going on these days in the content business, and all the journalists now seeking new ways to get paid, interest in the specialty field of ghostwriting has been rapidly rising. But outside of the recent Roman Polanski film, most of the writers we hear from who are looking to diversify know relatively little about how this traditionally opaque sector works -- in particular, how to get started in it and how to succeed at it.

To help provide some clarity to the curious, and give working writers a better sense of whether ghosting is for them, we have organized an introductory workshop with a panel of experts on the basics of the ghostwriting business. Among the topics the discussion will cover:

  • the state of today's ghostwriting market
  • the mechanics of ghostwriting a book
  • marketing your services,
  • building and maintaining a client base
  • contract and payment issues

Leading the discussion will be:
  • Dan Gerstein, President of Gotham Ghostwriters, New York's premier full-service writing firm
  • Ellen Neuborne, ASJA, former USA Today reporter, ghostwriter of more than a dozen book projects, creator of the online course "The Writer's Guide to Ghosting"
  • Jason Ashlock founder of the Moveable Type Literary Group
