Milton Toby

I’m an attorney (retired) and award-winning author who has been writing nonfiction books and magazine articles about Thoroughbred racing and legal issues in the horse industry since 1972. My most recent book, Taking Shergar: Thoroughbred Racing’s Most Famous Cold Case, is the true story of a cold evening in February 1983 when the Irish Republican Army stole one of the most valuable horses in the world. The IRA demanded a hefty ransom for the stallion, which was not paid. Shergar was never seen again. My current book project, for the University Press of Kentucky, is Unnatural Ability: The History of Performance-Enhancing Drugs in Thoroughbred Racing. It tracks the modern era of doping in horse racing from 1890 to the present and the mixed results of official efforts to catch the dopers. Unnatural Ability is due for release in August 2023.
