Idea Marketplace

Welcome to the American Society of Journalists and Authors Idea Marketplace page. Here you'll find everything you need to know about the Idea Marketplace, your opportunity to reach the eyes and ears of America's best independent writers of nonfiction.

How do I register?

Click here for the Idea Marketplace registration form (credit card).

What is the Idea Marketplace?

It's a trade show for story ideas. As an exhibitor, you'll be able to promote your or your client's stories to the more than 600 professional journalists and others who'll be attending ASJA's Annual Writers Conference on Saturday, April 25, 2009. Idea Marketplace exhibitors are also invited to use ASJA Members' Day (Friday, April 24) as a networking day at no additional fee. You'll be able to mingle with ASJA members, attend panels, and circulate without being tethered to an exhibit table. Then on Saturday the Conference opens to the public and attendees will be free to browse the IM throughout the day, allowing constructive relationships to develop between writers and exhibitors.

What our exhibitors say about Idea Marketplace:

Idea Marketplace helped me increase media coverage for our organization by making contact with freelancers and writers, a group that I had been missing unless they contacted me. I found that Idea Marketplace also offered the opportunity for me to meet many of my peers in the public relations business and offered opportunity to network and partner with other like groups. -- Lahne Curry, National Association of Social Workers

Who'll be exhibiting at the Idea Marketplace?

The tabletop displays will be available to virtually anyone with a story to tell. Public relations agencies, media entities, businesses, NGOs (non-governmental organizations), government agencies, and even individuals.

Who'll be attending Idea Marketplace?

ASJA's annual writers conference is one of the nation's premier events for professional independent writers. More than 600 people attend, including full-time freelancers or staff writers and editors from America's top publications. For more information about the 2009 Writers Conference, visit the Conference web pages. Check in often; we'll be adding information as the program develops.

Where/when will the Idea Marketplace be located?

The Idea Marketplace Exhibit Area will be open on Saturday, April 25, 2009, in the central areas of the conference itself. This high-traffic area ensures maximum visibility for every exhibitor.

How much does it cost?

The cost of a 6-foot by 30-inch tabletop at Saturday's Idea Marketplace is $500. NEW FOR 2009: The fee includes access to the All-Day Members-Only meeting on Friday, April 24, 2009. Sit in on panels and focus groups and mingle with ASJA members during the evening cocktail party. It's a full day for networking without being tethered to an exhibit table, for personal conversations with the professional writers you've come to meet

Double Exposure: Free Print Advertising!

Not only will your ideas and products reach our conference participants; your reach is expanded to the entire ASJA membership with a free ad in the April 2009 of The ASJA Monthly. You may place a business-card size ad at no extra cost. The ad insertion deadline for the April issue is February 1, 2009. So sign up quickly and get the free extra exposure. I represent a public relations agency. Can I promote more than one client?

You can promote as many or as few as you wish. Because writers attending the meeting will be looking for story ideas they can take back to their editors, it's best if you pitch your clients as part of a bigger story. Businesses, government agencies and other organizations exhibiting at the Idea Marketplace can also promote whatever story ideas they choose.

Can I bring my company's exhibit booth?

Sorry, exhibits are limited to the 6-foot by 30-inch tabletops.

How can I arrange for delivery of papers, brochures etc., to the hotel on the day of the event?

Arrangements for the delivery of materials, and for electrical and Internet hookups must be made directly with the Roosevelt Hotel. You will receive instructions and contact information for the Roosevelt with your confirmation when you register.

How do I register?

Is there a special lodging rate if I want to stay overnight at the Roosevelt?

For those wanting to stay overnight, special room rates are available. Details will be sent to you with your registration confirmation.
