What follows is a random and idiosynchratic list of cheap, moderately-priced and somewhat expensive and recommended hotels, bed-and-breakfasts and short-term apartment rentals, culled from the ASJA members' forum.

Caveat emptor: If you're contemplating a stay at a cheap hotel in NYC, check the customer reviews at http://www.tripadvisor.com. The page for NYC has an option for searching their list of hotels under $100/night.

Priceline.com has three- and four-star hotels for lower prices than anyone else. If you're thinking about trying Priceline, begin with http://www.biddingfortravel.com to learn how to navigate it and get a sense of which hotels release rooms to Priceline and in what price range (everything depends on the date for which you want reservations).

A group of moderate-priced name brand hotels (La Quinta, Ramada, etc.) owned, or maybe franchised, by one company in NYC. They're not dirt-cheap, but they're reasonable for Manhattan, with good locations --clean and orderly. Find them at http://www.applecorehotels.com.

Murray Hill East Suites. A member recently got a good deal through Priceline.com. A brisk five-minute walk from the Hyatt: 149 East 39th Street. 212-661-2100

Mayfair Hotel in Times Square. The rate was around $100 in 2002. Seems about double that now, according to TripAdvisor, although one recent visitor reports getting a $90 rate. The rooms are teeny, teeny, tiny. (Bathrooms too: like an airplane restroom). But I didn't have any complaints -- I survived, even tho I'm 6-foot-7 -- and the small size of the rooms might make the hotel a better deal than others. And you do get your own room and bathroom. Rates - which vary greatly by season (we're now in low season; April is high season) - are listed on their website, which is http://www.mayfairnewyork.com

Abingdon B&B (212-243-5384) in Greenwich Village (8th Avenue & West 12th St) at http://www.abingdonguesthouse.com.

Village House (212-529-2396) in Greenwich Village -- right across the street from Abingdon House, above. Info at http://www.incentravillage.com/index.html and http://www.peningtonpress.com/sleepcheapnyexcerpt.htm

Off-Soho Suites, on Rivington Street just off the Bowery at Little Italy, Chinatown, Soho and Orchard Street are right out the door and it's an easy walk to the #6 subway line that goes to Grand Central. http://www.offsoho.com/

André Balazs's new Times Square property, Hotel QT (125 W. 45th St.; 212/354-2323; www.hotelqt.com; doubles from $150), is like a groovy youth hostel. Rooms are outfitted with flat-screen TV's with DVD players, free high-speed Wi-Fi Internet access, and pillow-top mattresses covered with white duvets. The lobby pool has a swim-up bar; a coed sauna and steam room.

Short-term Apartment Rentals

New York B & B. They have apartments in many locations around the city. (800) 443-3800). http://www.manhattangetaways.com
