Frequently Asked Questions about ASJA’s One-on-One Essay Workshops
What are One-on-One Essay Workshops?
The One-on-One Essay Workshop is an individual session with an expert, focused on a specific piece of your writing, to help you make it as good as it can be.
Who teaches One-on-One Workshops?
Expert essay coaches are ASJA members with a particular expertise in the essay form. They have published essays of their own in such venues as New York Times Magazine, Woman’s Day, Village Voice, More, Working Mother, Parenting, Reader’s Digest and more.
What happens during a Workshop?
Each One-on-One Workshop lasts 20 minutes. Having read your piece in advance, your essay coach will sit down with you and provide detailed commentary on your piece along with concrete suggestions for making it stronger.
How do I sign up?
Sign up for a One-on-One Essay Workshop on the ASJA conference registration page, or on your mail-in registration form.
How do I submit my piece for the session?
Mail a typed (or computer printed) double-spaced copy to:
ASJA One-on-One Workshops
41 Belmont St.
Portland, ME 04101
DO NOT send your only copy. Submissions must be postmarked on or before March 15. 2005.
What kind of material can I send?
Submit one piece of writing only, up to 1,500 words long. This can be an essay, personal account, opinion piece, or other piece of creative nonfiction which you would like to work on and polish.
Can I submit my piece by e-mail?
Yes. Please include text within the e-mail. DO NOT send an attachment. E-mail no later than March 15 to 1on1@asja.org.
Should I send anything else?
Although not required, you are welcome to include a brief note about yourself, your writing experiences and credentials, and what you hope to do with your piece. Or anything else you’d like us to know about you and your writing.
How will I know when to show up for my Workshop?
You will be notified of your time slot at least a week before the conference. One-on-One Workshops run in 20-minute time slots between 10 am and 1 pm on Sunday, April 17th. Please note that sessions run back-to-back, and the schedule is tight. If you are late, you will lose that time. So it’s a good idea to make sure you know how to find the One-on-One Workshop room well in advance of your session time.
I want to sign up for one of the morning sessions, but I’m concerned about the time conflict.
Don’t worry. If you are signed up for one of the morning sessions, we will give you a time slot at noon or later.
