Crafting Queries that Sizzle
Diane Benson Harrington brings her six-week Internet class to life in a 3-hour workshop that's packed with information you thought you knew but really didn't: how to focus ideas, target markets, milk ideas for more mileage, and make those queries sing. Bonus: For personalized critiques the whole class will learn from, e-mail one or two story ideas or query letters (with ASJA in the subject line) to DianeBHarrington@aol.com by April 4. Diane, a former newspaper and magazine editor, has been freelancing since 1989. She's also a columnist for RealtyTimes.com and managing editor of Freelance Success.
Session B:
How to Write an Irresistible Book Proposal
In this information-packed session, learn the secrets of successful book proposals. Panelists include Deborah Blum, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Love at Goon Park and professor of journalism at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; Brenda Copeland, editor, Atria Books; Jacqueline Deval, publisher, Hearst Books and author of Publicize Your Book!; and Brian DeFiore, literary agent. Moderator: Sarah Wernick, ASJA, co-author of Quick Fit and other books. Bonus: Submit an excerpt from your proposal for discussion by the panel. See www.asja.org/wc/2004/bookprop.php for more information.
Session C:
Writing Your Life: The Art of the Personal Essay
When most people write personal essays, they tend to get lost in facts. They overlook the flavor, details and illuminating experiences that make their lives breathe for a reader—and provide moments of clarity for themselves. This workshop is about reawakening senses and sharpening memories, about learning to find those small moments that stand for larger truths. Come prepared to write and read in a supportive atmosphere! Session leader Beth Levine, ASJA, has been writing personal essays for 17 years. Her work has been published in such publications as Redbook, Woman's Day, Family Circle, Lifetime, Salon, and Good Housekeeping, among others.
1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Session D:
How Publishers Choose BooksAn Inside Look
This role-playing workshop, led by Jeff Kleinman, agent and intellectual property attorney with Graybill & English, teaches how editors and agents make buying decisions. Participants play executives in a publishing house: they can purchase the book ideas other participants offer for critique–or not. Fast-paced and fun, this workshop not only explains how publishing works but, more importantly, helps writers view their work through the eyes of an editor or agent. Moderator: Coeli Carr, ASJA. Combine this session with "How to Write an Irresistible Book Proposal" (session B) for a full-day education in how to sell a book in today's economy.
Session E:
The Next Step: Selecting, Approaching and Working with Agents
Moderator Trish Riley, ASJA, hosts six agents who will extend a hand to writers whose next career rung is making the transition from magazines to books. Each will share advice and tips on breaking into books, followed by revolving round-table discussions allowing writers to seek advice about their own pitch ideas from three of the agents in attendance. Panelists include literary agents Julie Barer, Sanford J. Greenburger Associates; Michael Broussard, Dupree, Miller & Associates; Sheree Bykofsky, Sheree Bykofsky Associates; Ellen Geiger, Curtis Brown Ltd.; Linda Loewenthal, David Black Agency; and Ann Rittenberg, Ann Rittenberg Literary Agency, Inc.
Session F:

Master your computing needs and save money at the same time! No engineering degree required! Learn upgrades and backup procedures; safeguard your computer from spammers, hackers, and viruses.
