Happy 60th Anniversary ASJA!
by Russell Wild
The year was 1948. Truman upset Dewey to win the White House. The Marshall Plan was enacted to help rebuild Europe. Israel came into being. The first McDonald's opened. The Frisbee was introduced. And the Cleveland Indians won the World Series. But most importantly, the Society of Magazine Writers—later to become the American Society of Journalists and Authors—was born.
There were nine writers at that first May 1948 meeting in New York City. There are now almost 1,400 of us. Although today we represent writers from across the United States and several other countries, we meet this month in the same city.
This year's annual conference -- April 11 - 13 -- will feature all the good things that usually make ASJA conferences so rewarding, but in addition, we'll have a number of very special anniversary happenings.
• See the premiere viewing of A Look Back at 60 Years of ASJA, an action-packed video produced by Lisa Iannucci and Brenda Lange, with input from dozens of fellow ASJA members. (Oh, yes, even yours truly makes a cameo appearance.)
• Pick up a copy of the 60th Anniversary tribute booklet, a beautiful, awe-inspiring read, edited by Susan Tyler Hitchcock and Lisa Stockwell, with contributions from Norm Lobsenz and many other ASJA members. ASJA, by the way, paid only for the paper. Thank you for the rest, iUniverse.
• Participate in a tribute to our founders—especially to those two who are still, after all these many, many years, proud members—Norm Lobsenz and Murray Teigh Bloom.
Although Murray and Norman are the only two from that first meeting of the Society of Magazine Writers still active in the organization, they are far from our only veteran members.
Following is a list of members who have been with us since the organization's chronological halfway point. I'm glad you're still on board, and will be with us to help celebrate ASJA's 60th Anniversary!
