From Mary Shelley to Mel Brooks: Susan Tyler Hitchcock's lucky 13th book, Frankenstein: A Cultural History, came out from Norton in October. PW called it "colorful and consistently entertaining"; Kirkus Reviews found it "thoroughly entertaining." Thumbs-up blurbs came in from Sara Karloff and Bela Lugosi, Jr., whose fathers played the monster for Universal


Super Volcano, Greg Breining's newest book, published this fall by Voyageur Press, describes the dangers posed by the still-active caldera below Yellowstone National Park. Sandra Friend nabbed the top spot with Florida Hikes! in the nationwide 2007 American Trails Web site Contest in the "Travel And Tourism site for Trails" category. The biannual contest spotlights trail-related Web sites of all types, by both organizations and individuals
Elaine Fantle Shimberg and son, Michael, a single father, co-authored The Complete Single Father (Adams Media) covering cooking, communication, carpools, discipline, daughters, fathering afar, etc. The New York Times best-selling author, Joseph Grenny (who wrote the foreword) said, "You'll find a wealth of wisdom in these pages."
Jen Singer has signed on with HCI to publish the Mommasaid Guides To Motherhood, a new series of humorous and validating guidebooks about babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers, based on her Web site, MommaSaid.net, a Forbes Best of the Web
Jill Amadio, who writes the automotive column for Entrepreneur magazine, has also been tapped to write a car column for the magazine's newly-launched WomanEntrepreneur.com. Amadio also freelances for Kelley Blue Blue Book online and thecarconnection.com
Ron Chepesiuk's latest book, Black Gangsters of Chicago (Barricade Books) was published this September. The History Channel has made him an expert consultant to its new series, Gangland, which begins this Fall season
Mark H. Masse has had three of his short stories accepted in the Amazon.com "Shorts" digital publication program. The stories are excerpts of his upcoming novel, Whatever Comes
New World Library has published a second edition of Allen and Linda Anderson's popular classic, Angel Animals: Divine Messengers of Miracles with a foreword by Good Morning America's resident veterinarian, Dr. Marty Becker. The Andersons won ASJA'S Outstanding Book Award in 2007 for their previous book, Rescued
Marni Jameson signed a two book deal with DaCapo Books, an imprint of Perseus. The first book, The House Always Wins: America's Most Trusted Home Columnist's Guide to Creating Your (Almost) Perfect Dream Home, will be out in hardcover, April '08. The second book, The Home Stretch, will come out in hardcover April '09. Both books are based on Jameson's humorous but practical home design column that runs in 25 papers in North America
Patricia Barnes-Svarney's 31st book is out: When the Earth Moves: Rogue Earthquakes, Tremors, and Aftershocks (Thunder's Mouth/Avalon). It looks at how earthquakes can strike in the "wrong places," like New York City, Charleston and even the Midwest
Is the ability to lead an inborn trait or perhaps a nebulous art form? In his third business book, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Motivational Leadership (Penguin Alpha), Scott Snair suggests that it's a science and a series of easily learnable skills.
Mavis Guinard's French-English Petit Guide de la Suisse Insolite/Made in Switzerland (Metropolis, Geneva 2007) leads the reader through an offbeat Switzerland. Nan Chase's first book, Asheville: A History, has been published by McFarland. The work is the first comprehensive, illustrated history of the city in a generation, and explores Asheville's magnificent architectural legacy in detail. Her second book, on bark house design, is due out next year from Gibbs Smith.
