New and Noteworthy Member Happenings

Lisa Holton's 10th book, The Encyclopedia of Financial Planning: What You Need to Know about Money from the Nation's Leading Financial Planners, was released in November by FPA Press, the publishing arm of the Denver-based Financial Planning Association. Holton served as editor of the book, a compendium of personal finance advice on more than 200 key topics


Janice Harayda has a launched a new daily book review blog, One-Minute Book Reviews, at www.oneminutebookreviews.wordpress.com. The blog is devoted to short reviews of new, classic and forthcoming books of fiction, nonfiction and poetry by all kinds of authors, "from presidents and kings to the scum of the earth (as Lily Tomlin's Ernestine might say)," but focuses mostly on books by groups slighted by other media, including women, poets, and the authors of books from overseas or from small presses
Claire Walter reports that she has become "a blogging fool." She has three going: http://culinary-colorado.blogspot.com on restaurants and food news from Colorado and elsewhere; http://travel-babel.blogspot.com on travel experiences and observations and http://nordic-walking-usa.blogspot.com on a fitness program that is the subject of her next book
Jan Friedman, author of the award winning guidebook Eccentric America, has won another Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism award from the Society of American Travel Writers. Winning the bronze as "Best Guidebook 2005-2006," Eccentric California was described by the judges as "the guidebook for anyone who wants to see ugly-dog contests, alleys with 50 years worth of chewed gum on the walls and G-String Guy on his Rollerblades. Well-researched, it will guide you with a sense of humor through California's quirkiest festivals, attractions, museums, tours, food and shopping."

Jennifer Pitzi Hellwig co-edited Dietary Reference Intakes: The Essential Guide to Nutrient Requirements, which was published in September by National Academies Press
Shari Caudron's Who Are You People? was published in August by Barricade Books. The book about passionate fanatics has been featured on NPR and Entertainment Weekly's "Must List," and excerpts have been published by Sky Magazine and Canada's National Post. Shari also just signed with The Lecture Bureau
In November, Catherine Wald enjoyed a productive-and fun-two-week residency at the Ragdale Foundation in Lake Forest, IL. Ragdale provides room, board and totally unstructured time to write-plus a small, supportive community of other writers and artists who never bug you when you're trying to work. Mary L. Peachin's book, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Sharks (Alpha/Penguin) has just been released in Russia
Dara Chadwick is the 2007 Weight Loss Diary columnist for Shape magazine. She'll also be writing a twice-weekly blog for www.shape.com
Member Michelle Nijhuis won the 2006 AAAS Science Journalism Award for Small Newspaper-circulation less than 100,000. She won for a series of articles on climate change that ran in High Country News
Joan Rattner Heilman's second book to be published this winter is the latest edition-the 17th-of her guidebook for people over the age of 49, Unbelievably Good Deals and Great Adventures That You Absolutely Can't Get Unless You're Over 50, 2007-2008 (McGraw-Hill. 16.95). This book now has sold well over a million copies.
