New and Noteworthy Member Happenings

Sandra E. Lamb's revised and expanded new edition of How to Write It: A Complete Guide to Everything You'll Ever Write, comes out this month from Ten Speed Press. The first edition was a Book of the Month Club Quality Paperback Selection; the new 80-chapter edition is designed to capture an even wider audience with coverage of everything from writing an apology note to authoring a book proposal.


Michael Behar's February 2005 feature story in Outside magazine called "The Selling of the Last Savage" will appear in the 2006 edition of The Best American Travel Writing, published by Houghton Mifflin and edited by Pico Iyer and Jason Wilson. Adventurous Women: Eight True Stories About Women Who Made a Difference (Henry Holt, 2006) is Penny Colman's eleventh book about historic women. She is a Distinguished Lecturer, Queens College, City University of New York
Both Denver daily newspapers have recently cited Claire Walter. Rocky Mountain News restaurant reviewer John Lehndorff recommended the "Dining Diary" on Walter's Web site in a recent column, and she was quoted in the Denver Post business section in a page one story on snowshoeing. She is the author of Snowshoeing Colorado and Culinary Colorado
Candy Harrington's newest title, There is Room at the Inn, reached bookstores this month. Comprising access reviews of 117 properties in 40 states-from Victorian inns and mountain retreats to safari camps and a dude ranch-the volume is billed as the first guidebook devoted to wheelchair-accessible inns and B&Bs
In May, Jenny B. Davis became WHERE Chicago Magazine's new contributing editor, covering spas and shopping in and around the Windy City
Janet Groene's "Take the Kids to Awesome Alaska" in South Florida Parenting Magazine won First Place in the Travel category in the national Parenting Publications of America editorial and design contest. It came as a surprise since Janet didn't know the magazine had entered her feature
The paperback edition of Susan Tyler Hitchcock's Mad Mary Lamb (Norton) was first in a four-book round-up, "New in Paperback: Women Who Dared," in the March 19 Washington Post Book World
Constance Hale's essay about how an older Italian painter teaches a struggling young writer to see appears in Best Travel Writing 2006, an anthology published by Travelers' Tales. The essay is included in Italy, A Love Story, published last fall by Seal Press
Tim Harper's small self-publishing/POD business, an offshoot of his editorial/publishing consulting, has outgrown the bookstore where it began. The new name and new home: Long Dash Books, 78 Walnut St., Montclair NJ, www.longdash.com
Woman's Best Friend: Women Writers on the Dogs in Their Lives, edited by Megan McMorris, was published by Seal Press in late March. Contributors include Kathryn Renner, Rebecca Skloot and Margaret Littman. Megan is working now on a cat version of the anthology for publication in spring '07
On March 25, Vanessa McGrady's Boy Crazy, tales of lust and madness ripped from her diaries, made its L.A. premiere at Sacred Fools Theater. The 10-minute play, set in 1982, chronicles her hilarious and poignant struggles with boys and being raised by a single father: ASJA Past President Patrick McGrady.
