New and Noteworthy Member Happenings

Just two months before his death on March 8, 2006, the Municipal Assembly and the Mayor named the board room of the Anchorage, AK, public library in honor of longtime member Alden Todd "in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the municipality of Anchorage," citing his services on the Library Advisory Board, his "publications in such journals as the Saturday Review, American Heritage and the Washington Post," and his "defense of the principle of intellectual freedom"


Rebecca Johns' first novel, Icebergs, was published in hardcover by Bloomsbury USA in April. Publishers Weekly says, "With stark, lovely prose, Johns weaves a delicate tapestry of linked narratives, confirming that the paths not taken can be as significant as the ones taken."
Michelle Nijhuis' series on climate change for High Country News, a regional environmental journal, has won a national science-writing honor-the American Geophysical Union's Walter Sullivan Award for Excellence in Science Journalism. In its citation, the AGU called the series "particularly well written an excellent example of science writing for the public."
Kathryn Black will present a weekend workshop based on her book, Mothering Without a Map: The Search for the Good Mother Within (Penguin), August 4-6, 2006, at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY
Allan Lyons' novel, Bamboozle! was published by ASJA Press in December
Veda Boyd Jones has two new biographies, Thurgood Marshall and Sacagawea, from Wright Group/McGraw Hill. JFK was released in March from Children's Group/Scholastic. Two historical novels for middle grade readers, Nellie the Brave and Laura's Victory, have been released by Barbour Books' Sisters in Time series
Cassandra Langer is now the Arts and Culture reporter for The Wire, Roosevelt Island's (NY) community newspaper. Her latest piece on artist Joan Snyder's exhibition at the Jewish Museum will be in the Spring issue of Woman's Art Journal
Sally S. Stich and Pamela Kramer are editors of a new book called Writing, Etc.: More than 250 Tips on Craft, Marketing and the Writer's Life from the Colorado Authors' League, published by Ghost Road Press (March, 2006). The book is packed with trade secrets, success strategies, and practical advice from over 80 Colorado writers, including ASJA members (current and former): Kathryn Black, Cameron Burns, Shari Caudron, Carol Ekarius, Bruce Most, Pamela Novotny and Claire Walter
Beverly Gray was a featured speaker at the 2006 National College Newspaper Convention sponsored by the Associated Collegiate Press. Her panels included "Getting Started in Screenplay Writing," and "Writing the Movie Review." Gray, author of Roger Corman: Blood-Sucking Vampires, Flesh-Eating Cockroaches, and Driller Killers, also teaches screenwriting through UCLA Extension
The PEN Oakland Literary Censorship Award honored Kitty Kelley, author of The Family: The Real Story of the Bush Dynasty, a national best seller
Lifetime will air the TV movie, Murder on Pleasant Drive, on May 8, tentatively. The movie tells the story of Sherrie Gladden-Davis' successful 10-year search for her sister's killer and the subsequent trial, which Gladden-Davis chronicled with co-author Brad Crawford in My Sister Is Missing (Emmis Books)
St. Martin's Press has published the new edition of Can You Say a Few Words? by Joan Detz. The book gives helpful advice for special occasion speeches (toasts, award ceremonies, Q&A sessions, memorials, patriotic events, panel presentations, dedications)
Sharon Naylor, author of 28 wedding books, was featured as the first-ever wedding author to conduct a weeklong wedding Q&A forum on BlissWeddings.com right after Valentine's Day. She has also partnered with PajamaGram.com and VermontTeddyBear.com as their wedding expert and spokesperson.
