New and noteworthy member happenings
New member Katherine Eban, an investigative journalist, has published her first book, Dangerous Doses: How Counterfeiters Are Contaminating America's Drug Supply (May 2005, Harcourt). The book was excerpted in the May issue of Vanity Fair and is a Barnes & Noble "Discover Great New Writers" selection for the fall
Joshua Berman (and co-author Chicki Mallan) won a bronze award in the Society of American Travel Writers 21st Annual Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Competition for Best Guidebook, Belize. Joshua's round-the-world travel blog, http://blog.stonegrooves.net, continues to receive attention as well
Culinary New Mexico: The Ultimate Food Lover's Guide (Fulcrum Publishing) by Sally Moore, has been named a finalist in the USA Book News awards in the Travel Guide category. Each year USA Book News recognizes unique books from both the mainstream and independent presses
Kathy Passero's newest book, Laguna Beach: Life Inside the Bubble, an inside look at MTV's hit reality series Laguna Beach, will be published by Simon and Schuster this month
Patricia Barnes-Svarney's 30th book, co-authored with her husband Thomas Svarney, is now out: The Handy Math Answer Book, her fourth with Visible Ink Press. The user-friendly book, with over 1,000 questions and answers, is especially for those people who duck when they hear the word "math"
Two Basset Hounds tangle leashes at the park, and so begins The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, a novella by Lauraine Snelling. Thane and Blythe's romance will be released by Steeple Hill this month in a collection of stories titled Once Upon a Christmas
The Garden Writers Association awarded Debra Prinzing the Bronze Award of Achievement for magazine writing at the September, 2005, annual symposium in Vancouver, B.C. The award recognized her article entitled, "Points of View," published by Better Homes & Garden's Garden Shed magazine in its Summer 2004 issue
Elyse Zorn Karlin has just celebrated the fifth anniversary of her publication, Adornment: the Newsletter of Jewelry & Related Arts. She recently lectured to the Gemological Institute of America's Alumni Chapter in Washington, D.C. on "By Hammer and Heart: Jewelry of the Arts & Crafts Movement"
Gwen Moran's new book, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Business Plans, which she co-authored with Sue Johnson, was published in October. She'll also be featured on the new PBS series, "American Consumer," speaking about her recently published book, Build Your Own Home on a Shoestring, which she co-authored with her husband, Henry Nonnenberg, Jr. and Chris Bradley
Robert Dreyfuss' first book, Devil's Game: How the United States Helped Unleash Fundamentalist Islam (Henry Holt, 2005), is a history of U.S. support for the Islamic right. Seymour Hersh calls the book "brilliant," and Chas W. Freeman, the U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia (1989-92) calls it "a fluent tour de force"
Claire Walter, author of Culinary Colorado, a food-oriented guidebook to the highest state, has been accepted for membership by the Colorado Chapter of Les Dames d'Escoffier. This international culinary organization is composed of women who are deemed to have achieved success in their culinary profession or food journalism, and also who contribute significantly to their communities
Kerri Fivecoat-Campbell's book, No Immediate Threat: The Story of an American Veteran (ASJA Press), was just released. The story chronicles her brother's life, and $1 from the sale of every book (www.writeforyou.biz) will go to the Heart of America Stand Down, an event that benefits homeless veterans
