American Heart Association
DESCRIPTION: The American Heart Association announces the call for entries for the 2010 Howard L. Lewis Achievement Award, the association’s highest honor for health and science reporting. The award was established in 2000, to recognize and honor the career achievements of science, health and medical journalists who have documented the considerable progress made in the fight against heart disease and stroke. This career achievement award was created in memory of Howard L. Lewis, who led the Association’s national science and media relation’s office for two decades. Recipients are chosen independently by a panel of their peers, all past winners of the award. The judging panel reserves the right to not present an award should entries not meet the standards for career achievement.
DATES OF EVENT: Postmark deadline for entry is Sept. 3. Award will be presented Nov. 15.
LOCATION OF EVENT: Award will be presented in Chicago at a reception during the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2010.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE: All U.S. local and national journalists with at least five years of experience in health/medical and science reporting in print, broadcast and online media are eligible. Entrants can be self-nominated or nominated by a colleague.

PRIZE OR END RESULT: Each award recipient receives a $2,000 honorarium and a citation. Airfare and one night’s lodging for Scientific Sessions are also available to the recipients.

Population Institute's Global Media Awards
DESCRIPTION: The Population Institute's Global Media Awards are devoted to drawing attention to global population issues. The award honors those who have contributed to creating an awareness of population problems through their journalistic endeavors in a meritorious manner.
DATES of EVENT: ? Sometime after September 7.
LOCATION of EVENT: Winners will receive award in San Francisco, CA with all expenses paid.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE: Entries will be evaluated on their potential to educate and inform policymakers or the general public about issues related to population growth.
